Day 19: The Silent Influence of Your Environment
Welcome back to the Sacred Routine Challenge! We're continuing our week of deeper journaling by looking beyond ourselves and toward the things that influence us most: our environment. Your routines don’t exist in a vacuum. Routines are constantly shaped and impacted by the spaces you inhabit, the people you're with, and the digital world you navigate.

Today, we're going to reflect on this powerful connection. How does your physical and social environment help or hinder your ability to create and sustain a sacred routine? This is a crucial step in understanding why some habits feel easy and others feel like an uphill battle. It’s about recognizing that you are part of a larger system, and to truly create a life of intentional living, you must be aware of your surroundings.

Your task for today is to take out your journal and favorite pens, and ask yourself: How does my environment (home, work, relationships) impact my routines?

Let's break that down:

  • Home Environment: Look around your home. Is your morning ritual supported by your space? Is your bedroom a calming sanctuary that encourages rest, or is it a cluttered space that makes it hard to wind down? Does your kitchen invite you to make a nourishing breakfast, or is it filled with distractions? Consider how your physical space either reinforces or challenges your desired habits.

  • Work Environment: How does your workspace influence your routines? Does a demanding work schedule make it difficult to take a midday pause? Does a constant stream of notifications or an open office plan make it hard to focus? Or do you also have 40 tabs open at one time? Acknowledging these external factors is a key part of building a sustainable routine that works for your reality.

  • Relationships: Think about the people in your life—your family, friends, and partner. Do they support your commitment to new habits? For example, does your partner encourage your evening wind-down ritual, or do they suggest a late-night Netflix binge? Do your friends respect your desire to get up early, or do they encourage staying out late? The people we spend our time with have a significant impact on our daily choices.

This self-reflection is not about placing blame. It's about gaining clarity and power. When you understand the external forces at play, you can make conscious decisions to adapt. You might choose to set stronger boundaries, tidy your space to create a more supportive atmosphere (it might be just decluttering your underwear drawer), or have a conversation with a loved one about your goals.

By aligning your physical and social environments with your intentions, you're building a support system for your routines, making them feel less like a chore and more like a natural part of your life. This is the essence of sacred routine—creating a holistic and intentional life where every part of you, and your surroundings, is in harmony.
