Day 23: The Art of Habit Stacking
Welcome back to the Sacred Routine Challenge! We’re in Week 4, and our focus is on integration and making our new sacred routines truly sustainable. Yesterday, we chose our one non-negotiable ritual, a practice to anchor us no matter what. Today, we’re going to use a powerful technique called habit stacking to seamlessly weave another ritual into your day without it feeling like an extra chore.

The concept is simple: instead of trying to add a new habit from scratch, you “stack” it onto an existing one. Think of it as linking a new behavior to a behavior you already do effortlessly. This leverages the momentum of your established habits and makes the new one feel natural and easy. It removes the friction of "remembering" and instead turns your existing routines into a prompt for a new, intentional action.

Your task for today is to choose a small, supportive ritual you've practiced this month and stack it onto an existing habit.

For example, your existing habits could be:
  • Brushing your teeth
  • Brewing your morning coffee
  • Taking a shower
  • Turning off the lights before bed

Now, choose one of these and attach a new ritual to it.
  • After I brew my coffee, I will drink a glass of water with intention. (This stacks your hydration ritual onto your coffee ritual).
  • After I brush my teeth at night, I will write down three things I am grateful for. (This stacks your gratitude ritual onto your evening routine).
  • Before I sit down for dinner, I will take three deep breaths to ground myself. (This stacks a mindfulness practice onto your evening meal).
The formula is: After I [EXISTING HABIT], I will [NEW RITUAL].

By using this simple structure, you’re not asking your brain to remember something new out of the blue. You’re simply creating a powerful link. Over time, the new ritual will become an automatic part of your day, just like the existing habit it’s attached to.

This practice of habit stacking is a cornerstone of sustainable change. It recognizes that our lives are already full of patterns and that the most effective way to introduce a new behavior is to connect it to an old one. This isn't about adding more to your plate; it's about making your routines work for you. By intentionally stacking these small actions, you are creating a ripple effect of positive change throughout your day.

Meet Sarah Sik

For so long, I was filled with anxiety.  My emotions were all over the place.

I am a military wife and mom of two boys.

Always needing to be braced for change filled me with so much stress and overwhelm.  My thoughts and feelings were running wild.  I felt like I was always fighting an uphill battle, and never gaining any traction.

Then, something magical happened and things started to change.

It was like walking into the most beautiful forest and seeing the sun shining down brightly on my face as I peeked up at the sky.

Suddenly, I started to take control and things just became clearer.
