Welcome back to the Sacred Routine Challenge! This week has been all about building a foundation of awareness, and today, we're going to turn our attention to the end of the day. Just as the morning sets the tone, how we close out our day has a powerful impact on our rest and our readiness for tomorrow.
Many of us know the feeling well: the end of the workday is a mad dash to get dinner made, kids to bed, and chores done. The moment we get home, the pace accelerates, and the sense of calm we might have cultivated earlier in the day is completely gone. This constant rush is a significant energy leak that can lead to burnout and poor sleep, making it nearly impossible to show up for ourselves the next morning.
Today's task is a simple but powerful act of evening reflection. I want you to take a moment and think about your day. What part of it tends to feel the most rushed? Is it the transition from work to home? The chaos of the evening meal? The struggle to wind down and get to bed at a reasonable hour?
Once you've identified that specific time block, I want you to ask yourself a deeper question: Why?
Why does that part of your day feel so rushed? Is it a genuine lack of time, or is it a result of a pattern or habit? Perhaps you're trying to do too much, or maybe you're distracted by your phone when you should be getting started on a task (I’m speaking from experience here!!). Maybe it's not a lack of time, but a lack of intention. The feeling of being rushed is often a symptom, not the root cause. The root cause could be procrastination, a lack of boundaries, or simply being unaware of how you're spending your time.
By understanding the "why," you can begin to see the levers you have to create change. This isn't about blaming yourself; it's about gaining clarity. This mindful awareness is the first step toward transforming your evenings from a frantic sprint into a calming evening ritual.
Tomorrow, we will begin the work of building a new, intentional habit to replace one of these rushed feelings. But for today, just sit with your reflection. Journaling about this will help you solidify your understanding. When you know why you feel rushed, you can start to address the true issue, rather than just the symptom. This is the essence of creating a sacred routine that truly serves you, bringing a sense of calm and control to your entire day.
