Welcome back to the Sacred Routine Challenge! We’ve been focusing on weaving small, supportive rituals into our days, from intentional mornings to grounding midday pauses. Today, we turn our attention to the crucial transition from the activity of the day to the stillness of night. Creating a consistent evening wind-down ritual is essential for quality sleep, which in turn impacts our energy, mood, and overall well-being.
Think back to Day 6 when we reflected on the most rushed part of our day. For many, the evening is a whirlwind of tasks and screen time that can leave us feeling wired and unable to properly relax before bed. Today, we’re going to address this by intentionally designing a pre-sleep routine that signals to your body and mind that it’s time to slow down.
Your task for today is to begin an evening wind-down ritual that starts at least 30 minutes before you plan to go to sleep. The key here is to choose activities that are calming and screen-free. The blue light emitted from our devices can interfere with melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep and disrupting the quality of our rest.
Here are a few ideas to incorporate into your evening ritual:
Read a physical book: Choose something enjoyable but not too stimulating. The act of turning pages and focusing on a story can be a wonderful way to disconnect from the day’s stresses.
Journal your thoughts: Spend a few minutes writing down your reflections on the day, your gratitudes, or anything that’s on your mind. This can help you process your emotions and clear your mental space before sleep.
Gentle stretching or restorative yoga: Light stretches or calming yoga poses can help release tension in your body and prepare you for rest.
Listen to calming music or a guided meditation: Choose something soothing that helps quiet your mind.
Engage in a relaxing hobby: This could be knitting, drawing, or any other quiet activity that doesn’t involve a screen. I have been dabbling in art (coloring, watercoloring painting, and zen tangles).
The specific activities you choose for your evening wind-down are less important than the intention behind them. This is a sacred routine designed to help you transition peacefully from wakefulness to sleep. Consistency is also key. Try to practice your chosen ritual around the same time each night to help regulate your body's natural sleep-wake cycle.
By consciously creating this screen-free buffer before bed, you’re prioritizing your sleep and setting yourself up for a more restful night. This small act of self-care is a powerful way to end your day with intention and prepare for a refreshed tomorrow.
