A Deeper Look: Turning "Flaws" into Strengths
Welcome back to our Shadow Work series. So far, we've explored the triggers that others present, the lies we tell ourselves, and the limiting beliefs that hold us back. In this blog, we're taking a radically different approach to our perceived flaws. What if the traits you've been taught to hide or dislike about yourself are not flaws at all, but rather misunderstood strengths waiting to be reclaimed?

Our journal prompt for today is: "Which of my 'negative traits' might actually be misunderstood strengths?"

This is a key practice in what Jungian psychology calls integrating the "golden shadow." The golden shadow holds our repressed positive qualities—the ones we have pushed away because we were taught they were "too much" or would make us unlikable.

Think about a trait you have labeled as "negative" about yourself. Perhaps you see yourself as:
  • "Too emotional." What if that sensitivity is a superpower? It might mean you are deeply empathetic, intuitive, and capable of profound connection with others. This isn't a flaw; it's a gift.
  • "Too stubborn." We often hear this as a criticism, but what if it's actually a sign of your incredible determination and resilience? It might mean you have the unshakeable will to see things through to the end, a trait that is essential for achieving big goals.
  • "Too messy or disorganized." What if this "messiness" is a sign of your creative and free-flowing nature? It might mean you prioritize spontaneity and passion over rigid structure, which can be the source of great innovation.
  • "Too aggressive or blunt." What if this is actually a sign of your honesty and courage? It might mean you are a natural leader, someone who can speak the truth and set firm boundaries, even when it's uncomfortable.

The labels we've placed on ourselves often came from external sources—parents, teachers, or society—who were simply trying to fit us into a comfortable box. They may have meant well, but their judgments led us to exile parts of our authentic selves.

Shadow work isn't about becoming a new person; it's about becoming more of who you already are. Today’s prompt invites you to look at your "flaws" with new eyes. Instead of criticizing them, ask yourself:
  • What is the positive intention behind this trait?
  • In what context could this trait be a superpower?
  • How can I honor and express this quality in a healthy, integrated way?

By re-examining these traits, you can begin to retrieve the energy you have spent on hiding and self-criticism. This is a profound act of self-love. You are giving yourself permission to be your full, authentic self, a person who is not only a collection of virtues, but a tapestry of all your qualities, perceived flaws and all. The ultimate benefit of this practice is that it frees you from the burden of trying to be perfect and allows you to stand in your power, exactly as you are.

It was like walking into the most beautiful forest and seeing the sun shining down brightly on my face as I peeked up at the sky.

Suddenly, I started to take control and things just became clearer.
